A new V3 engine from Honda
Honda's new V3 engine with electric compressor at EICMA
Press Release
Honda’s, and the world’s first, V3 motorcycle engine with an electrical compressor, was unveiled at EICMA in Milan in early November. This is a concept bike with a difference, with two cylinders at the front and one at the rear and a 75 degree layout.
This water cooled 75 degree V3 engine, in its all new slimline form, is now in development for larger displacement motorcycles.
It sports the world’s first electrically driven compressor for motorcycles, situated on the top of the engine in front of the airbox, which boasts that it can control intake air compression, irrespective of the engine rpm, so high-response torque can be delivered from lower rpm. The electrical compressor offers a high degree of freedom in the layout of the bike and doesn’t need an intercooler.
Although the turbo is similar to a conventional gas pressure driven one, the electrically driven one on this new concept engine offers sustained intake pressure despite the RPM. Plus the electrical system makes packaging the bike easier as it can be mounted anywhere on the engine and doesn't need any exhaust modifications.
Honda has always been at the cutting edge of engine innovation and is now trying to meet the challenge of developing electric motorcycles. This new V3 engine with an electric compressor is a new stride for the developers at Honda and with this engine tech applied to larger displacement models, Honda will continue on the way towards mass production.
