Dressed up for the new year
RAC figures show that road dressing has increased since last year
Press Release
New pothole robots poised, ready to dress the roads
The road Emulsion Association (REA) has produced new data which shows that there's been an increase in surface dressing with bitumen emulsions on UK roads. Bitumen emulsions are a surface coating which gets put on the road to help keep potholes at bay. The idea is that it is a preventative treatment which should protect the road surface and keep pothole formation at bay for longer.
The rate potholes are appearing on our roads is truly shocking, so anything which might help slow their development down is a good thing. This news is good for riders and drivers, and should help to slow down the erosion of the roads and the exponential increase in potholes.
Here's a comment from Simon Williams, the head of policy at the RAC:
“It’s very good news for drivers that more roads were surface dressed between April and September this year than in 2023 as this should prevent thousands of potholes appearing.
“We hope the preventative road maintenance tide has well and truly turned as last year’s surface dressing figure dipped to a 12-year low. The fact so little surface dressing was carried out last year helps explain why drivers are so angry and frustrated with potholes, something we’ve very clearly seen in research for this year’s RAC Report on Motoring with 56% of drivers listing the poor state of local roads as their number-one motoring concern."
So it seems that things may be looking up regarding the state of the roads, if so that's great news, as we are all paying too much to get our bikes and cars repaired from damage caused by potholes. Plus potholes can actually be really dangerous for motorcyclists, they're much harder to negotiate on two wheels, so it is particularly good for riders if the roads get fixed.
Have to say though haven't seem much evidence of this round our way! Anything going on where you are? Let us know at
