Bikesure study shows interesting results

London could see twice as many motorcycles in the future, according to a recent survey by Bikesure.

The insurance company questioned 1,000 Londoners about their travel plans in light of the new Ultra Emissions Zone (ULEZ). Among its key findings was that there had been a 141% increase in the use of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters as Londoners have begun opting for lower-emission vehicles.

What is ULEZ?

ULEZ fees came into force on 8th April 2019. It specifies that anyone who is using a vehicle which does not meet Euro 3 standards has to pay a £12.50 a day fee. Unlike the Congestion Charge Zone, the fees apply to motorcyclists as well as other vehicle users.

---------------------

3.7% of the survey participants had been motorcycle, moped or scooter owners before ULEZ. Now, 8.8% said they were changing to a low-emission powered-two-wheeler to avoid having to pay the fees.

33% of the survey’s respondents said that due to the new charges, they would no longer be able to afford to commute using their own vehicle. Over 80% said they had either already changed their mode of transport or were considering doing so.

But while 44.6% of respondents said they were frustrated by the new fees, 47% are happy with it. It is also more accepted within central parts of London, where the rate of people willing to give up their vehicle is much higher.
