The MCIA is welcoming the Government's Transport Decarbonisation Plan - an environmental action plan which now includes new positive opportunities for PLVs, including motorcycles and scooters as part of the solution.

These new transport ideas have arisen after three years of discussions, and much input from the MCIA. Research has helped to uncover the current transport picture and shown the part which Motorcycles and Scooters can play in solving some of the problems we face with transport decarbonisation. The MCIA has been chosen by the government to jointly lead the creation and delivery of the action plan along with the Zemo Partnership. It's good to know that a motorcycle organisation is so closely involved in these important top level discussions for the future of transport.

Tony Campbell, Chief executive of the MCIA said:
“We remain steadfast in our continuing to be a constructive partner to government in ensuring the many benefits our sector brings to society are fully realised, at a local and national level, whilst doing everything in our power to ensure our fleets remain as green and clean as possible. Motorcycles, Scooters and other forms of Powered Light Vehicles will play a key role and we are extremely happy this has now been recognised”

So for the first time since it was invented, the internal combustion engine with all it's sights, sounds, smells, power and pollution is really heading for the hills and like it or not, alternatives are the shape of things to come. The decarbonisation plan though does not necessarily mean all vehicles must be electric. There could be hydrogen or synthetic fuelled engines if developed in the next few years to the required standards. The deadline of 2040 states that all new vehicles must be totally zero emission and motorcycles and scooters by 2035 at the latest.

The new initiative and the transition will be supported by 2.8 billion from the UK government to smooth the wheels as the UK changes over to implement the Green Plan.

We live in interesting times indeed, but times have been interesting for what seems like forever. So, where do you stand on this inevitable change and the demise of the petrol powered two wheeler?

• C. Hate it, love the petrol engine and wish things would not change
