The Brighton Speed Trials has been given the go ahead!

Following a meeting held on Wednesday (Jan 23) between the Brighton and Hove council's Economic Development and Culture committee, a final decision has been made to allow the Brighton Speed Trials to continue.

The event, which is organised by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club and has been running since 1905, faced cancellation this year due to an accidental death during the 2012 event when a sidecar hit a wall. An investigation into the case led to the 2013 event being cancelled, and it was unsure whether the 2014 event would be given the go ahead by the council.

The Brighton Speed Trials (as well as attracting plenty of tourism to the town) has touched the hearts of many who have come to love what is said to be the longest-running motorsports event in the world. A petition was set up in a bid to save the 2014 Speed Trials in the lead up to the council meeting, which, thanks to the thousands of signatures supporting the cause, has been significant in the council's decision to give the event the go ahead.

Some 12,262 people signed the online petition, certainly adding to the pressure that the council had when meeting to discuss the future of the event on Wednesday.

Labour counciller - Brian Fitch- has stated "I think it's an amazing petition. They certainly deserve the credit for the effort they have made but, more importantly, it has shown us as politicians the interest there is in this particular event and it makes sense that it continues."

The huge amount of support that the petition had proves the event's popularity among Brighton locals and the tourists who flock to the town every year to watch it. F1 legend Sir Stirling Moss was said to be one of the people to back the petition that has obviously caused quite a stir in the world of motorsports.

To the delight of many, the Speed Trials is set to take place along Madeira Drive, as per usual, on a hopefully sunny Saturday this September. We're looking forward to it!
