Whitelock 'Tinker Toy' is up for sale at Stafford

One to six cylinder motorcycle - fair enough, but how about 48?

Lucy England

Simon Whitelock's brainchild, the 'Tinker Toy' is the Guiness World Record holder for the most cylinders in any vehicle engine! He started by building multi-cylinder motorcycles years ago starting with a Kawasaki inline-three which he converted into an inline-four. He progressed to a nine-cylinder motorcycle constructed out of three connected Kawasaki triple then an inline seven - he'd obviously got a taste for it! Building on his experience of grafting Kawasaki engines together he clearly decided it was time for a piece de resistance. So here it is, this latest creation has 48 cylinders in total, a 4.2 litre engine. It's rather mind boggling and a bit of an arm stretcher you could say! It's made from 16 Kawasaki KH250 three cylinder engines! So that means six banks of eight cylinders each. The Tinker Toy was created by Simon Whitelock in 2003 and he assures prospective buyers that the vehicle is road legal!
In order to start this monster there is a 125cc 'donkey engine' taken from a scooter, this was initially a 50cc two stroke engine but it wasn't powerful enough, at least it's not a kickstart! The alternator comes from a car and there's a BMW K100 gearbox to provide power to the rear wheel. The front end has Honda Goldwing brakes, callipers and forks - obviously with reinforcement so they are load bearing to 600kg!

The engine has a six way split throttle to cope with its six banks of cylinders. Clearly some alterations were required to get this machine operational, plus a great deal of vision and a good imagination!
The fuel tank is under the cylinder banks while the old tank is now a cover for the bike's luminition electronic ignition system - after the requisite stretching!
So if this ultimate Kawasaki unique bitsa two stroke is appealing to you, you fancy hopping aboard a real head turner and have a spare £40,000 - £60,000, you can bid for it at Bonhams at the Stafford sale in April.
Are you going to buy this bike? Do you have long arms?
