What's the best piece of motorcycling advice your father's given you?

• 06/06/16 -  When I was eleven years old my father told me. Before you learn to drive a car, you will learn to ride a motor bike. Because you will learn more in one year riding a motor bike than the rest of your life driving a car. But always remember that a dented wing on a car is a broken leg on a motor bike. My father was a keen motorcyclist.His advice has saved me many times

Good advice as one day I was behind a car and the car driver saddled the biggest dead badger I've ever seen which brushed my foot as I rode past! Would have had me off if I was in the middle of the lane. Thanks Dad


• 07/06/16 - In the days of 4 pennies to operate a phone box, my Dad gave me 4p, said " Ring your mother and tell her you are OK, when you leaving hospital, not when you still bleeding after the crash!" He was also a biker, and she was nervous when either of us rode.


• 07/06/16 -  "Don't " ..."Well, learn to drive first so your time to learn road craft is safer. Then when you're about ten years on the road if you still must..."... I listened and I know this advice has paid dividends

• 08/06/16 - My dad said if you bring a motorcycle home I'll put an axe through it. My mum and I hid it until dad needed a lift to work. When I got my boys their first bike, the eldest was 5 and his brother was 3, who was standing on the saddle as his brother rode the bike past me at 25mph and I shouted don't crash and don't tell your mum


• 03/07/16 - Patience perseverance and a little drop of oil will drive a snail from here to Jerusalem. (And ‘don't let yourself be lead through life by your d**k’)


• 03/07/16 - "You'll hear a lot of people say 'ride like everyone's trying to kill you', they're right, because you're a t**t". Weird relationship between me and my dad.. Haha


• 03/07/16 - When passing side roads with vehicles waiting, always look at the wheels and not the drivers. This is a good indication of whether the driver has seen you or not. Ride Safe


• 03/07/16 - If you don’t feel well you wont ride well. If in doubt leave the bike in the garage and live to ride another day.


• 04/07/16 - Whatever else you do always change the oil regularly


• 05/07/16 - When riding past junctions,assume that whoever is there is going to pull out on you, never pull out when someone has an indicator on as they've probably forgot it's on, (that one has actually saved me some serious pain on more than one occasion!), and the best of all, buy good quality kit and use it on every ride. You can get hurt close to home. (I once had an accident less than a mile from home and if I hadn't been wearing my leathers I would have been in a mess, I walked away with just bruising).


• 05/07/16 - Don't plan your riding 100 yards ahead. 200 yards and you'll be OK.


• 06/07/16 - When the sun is low behind you and everything is lit up clearly, remember that those coming towards you can hardly see the road, let alone you


• 06/07/16 - It's not just cars that should think bike. You should as well. When overtaking think "bike about to appear coming towards you at high speed".


• 06/07/16 - Don't get into a race with an idiot car behind you. The point is to ride at the speed you enjoy, not someone else. Let them overtake and then show them bikes are best by passing them when they reach the inevitable stream of traffic.


• 07/07/16 - My father, a keen motorcyclist gave me the advice "Look after it son and it will look after you"


• 13/07/16 - Remember it is not the speed that kills, it is the sudden stop! Advice a Police Rider gave me. I have never forgotten it since.


• 18/07/16 - Get trained he said .... I did by ACU.RAC scheme years ago. The few accidents I have have been maintenance related. So I would say Get trained but check that bike thouroughly particularly after it has had work done to it .
